É un manuale di tecnica di ripresa fotografica e di illuminazione

A lighting and photographic shooting tecnique handbook

At a turning-point in my life, I have resolved on publishing this book induced by friends and untrue friends. I shall be supported by the first ones and defamed by the second ones for this resolution, but you can foresee it because in the world there are very lovable people and people to throw away. I met photographers and false photographers: the former were great, qualified, and humble, the latter were vexatious, nervously strined, frightened, and hypocritical. In the first part of my life, I experienced photography as I had a mistress; I should have spent more time with my family, and in my wanderings with it I often could not help regretting, unfairly, a camera. I am sure I never bluffed: I fancied, looked for, found out, I was lucky. I hate to chat, I love to talk, which is not the same thing. Each photo of mine holds the precise mood of the moment in which I pressed the shutterrelease, because all days are different.

I would like to tell young photographers few words as a moral support. When you show your portofolio and people congratulate you but no one asks a work to order, you do not have to be disheartened: you are not fated victims or eternal unappreciated geniuses, be so humble as to "read" your photos; you will find out mistakes and you will understand that you do not like them, too. Never hide behind the cliche' that photography is a subjective matter. Words. A photograph can be a subjective matter only when it is technically well made. Always remember to take photos suitable to the person you are addressing at. If you go to a fun-fair and you shoot with your carbine, there is a target with several concentric circles in front of you and that is what you have to aim at. You fire neither on the right, nor on the left, nor at the man in the stall. It is the same thing when you have a possible purchaser in front of you: try to understand his/her personality and tastes as much as possible and show his/her suitable photos. Never consider yourselves "successful": we all still have to become successful. Never consider yourselves as "artists": those that I know have already left us. Try to have a high opinion of your colleagues and true friends always around you. With reference to this, I would like to quote a sentence of a very famous american philosopher who said that, after his death, he wanted "I COME BACK SOON" to be written on his tomb-stone, to make his friend happy and his enemies unhappy.
